Workshop at Memorial Hall Bishopbriggs 24/06/2010

These are the comments obtained from the 60 or so people who attended the above event.  The community representatives' names attached to each set of responses are purely to identify who was facilitating each particular workshop - they are not the thoughts or opinions held by those individuals.

1 Widening of Kirkintilloch Road and traffic management.

2 Quality housing, centrally located. Smaller in size including affordable flats / apartments.

3 Retirement village.

4 Retention of historic buildings.

5 No sense of history – village – story.

6 Safe environment, security, parkland, lighting.

7 Pedestrian areas, safe for children and families.

8 Aesthetically pleasing – nice stone, trees.

9 Incorporate traffic into safe area.

10 Improve quality of town centre. – Reduce traffic.

11 Town centre destination – attractive.

12 Allotments.

13 Recreate village feel, traffic around not in.

14 Park – no traffic – by pass.

15 Attractive space for elderly. Covered shopping mall, small units.

16 Take away traffic.

17 Bring back village feel.

1 Commuter parking accessed from Kirkintilloch Road. Element of park & ride (none at present). Parking problems in Kenmure area.

2 No increase in traffic.

3 Widen road outside library.

4 Traffic South Crosshill Road, - rat run / race.

5 By pass 40 years on.

6 Retain old buildings history of village.

7 Derelict land at St Mungo Street, use as parking.

8 Pedestrian Link Bridge across railway + walkway.

9 Hotel.

10 Children’s park.

11 Something for the elderly (public bowling green).

12 Traffic light phasing – create centre.

13 Residents only parking ( as west end in Glasgow )

14 Quality shops, small units, mall / precinct. ( subsidise )

15 Safeway killed Churchill Way.

16 Good parking.

17 Interesting shops.

18 Housing – quality – affordable.

1 Knocked down sports hall.

2 All weather pitches.

3 Use of school facilities (primary).

4 Skate Park. The one in Kirkintilloch is free, well used with little trouble.

5 Requirements for girls.

6 10 pin bowling.

7 Cinema. Age related themes.

8 Council disregard for young people.

9 Make their own entertainment / activities.

10 Parental responsibilities.

11 Leisuredrome. Costs, good facilities, relatively remote.

12 Good cycling activities / club.

13 Who would run activities?

14 Tennis, especially indoor.

1 No supermarket.

2 Empty Retail Park, plenty parking.

3 Shoe shop, deli (Peckham’s type).

4 Bookshop.

5 Ironmonger.

6 Variety of traditional shops – high rents.

7 Morrisons is adequate, size OK.

8 Quality small shopping mall ( undercover )

9 Parking underground, St Mungo Street.

10 Adequate parking.

11 Better road design. Bishopbriggs Cross.

12 Flexible public space, Indoor market.

13 Old street inside, as at Kelvin Hall.

14 Community living and working together.

15 Hotel leisure, conference centre. Functions. 100 bed mini Bishopbriggs Hilton.

16 No petrol station.

17 Greenery aesthetics.

1 Traffic survey to be on a normal business day.

3 Free bus service.

7 Do nothing to increase traffic.

1 Under used facilities.

2 Why encourage young people into centre?

3 Mis use of park space.

4 Climbing.

5 Hang outs and no go areas.

6 Activities supervised or not.

7 Nothing for young people needed.

8 Danger of attracting youth from beyond Bishopbriggs.

9 Like to wander in groups.

10 Current activities provided for many but paid for. Must be long term.

11 Different sorts of sports facilities.

12 Drop in centre.

13 Enough facilities already.

14 Survey around the high school.

1 Supermarket – effect on trade.

2 Car [park locations.

3 Town centre. New shops elsewhere.

4 Lack of choice of shops.

5 Local mal / shops desired ( indoor )’

6 Hotel / function suite ( only Eagle lodge )

7 12,000. Car movements at supermarket.

8 Chapel house to be listed and retained.



Group 3 Community Donald Macdonald


1 Provision of sports, or large, hall of an affordable nature.

2 Village square with a mix of shops where people can walk and stroll without cars.

3 A town centre with trees / band stand and a mix of town houses and flats. i.e. like the large area at the front of the library.

4 A different type of town centre e. g. a mall.

5 Social area where people can sit and chat.

6 Cinema – family friendly.

7 10 pin bowling family type activity.

8 Local residents should be consulted and listened to.

9 East Dunbartonshire has a large population of older people, - So specific activities for this group. Downsize housing. Supported housing e.g. managed house / flat.

10 Care home.

11 Don’t put care home next to railway.

12 Care for people in own homes.

1 Incorporate decent car parking.

2 Commuters are parking in residential roads often blocking.

3 Small car park designated for railway station. Could create a car park at Springfield Park.

4 Circular bus.

5 Underground car park.

6 Electric buses in Bishopbriggs.

7 Cycle tracks.

8 Park & ride facilities.

9 A big supermarket would have a negative effect on pollution in Bishopbriggs.

10 A park and ride at Collins / Avivva. (Westerhill).

11 Park & ride at Morrisons deck access.

12 Keep old houses including presbytery.

13 Bishopbriggs needs some bright flowers, - hanging baskets – welcoming.

1 Skate park

2 Bike Park – jumps.

3 Growth in cycling.

4 New tennis facilities + 5 a side.

5 Youth club facilities within hub (shared use).

6 Better site for sports hall ( leisuredrome )

7 Astroturf all weather.

8 Free use –v- cost.

9 Would have to make money.

10 Music rooms, practice rooms and studios.

11 Climbing wall.

12 Offer more – if nothing ………problems.

13 Mis perceptions of youth.

14 Other non sports facilities.

15 Good location within walking distance.

16 Glasgow climbing centre is a good example.

17 Must work with other uses.

18 Girls needs to be met.

19 Multi use. Purpose let by age by day and night

1 M & S, Boots and Matallan have gone into out of town site. Would wish these to be in town centre.

2 Develop both town centre and out of town in balance.

3 Supermarket development as proposed is too big. Prefer housing i.e. residential with smaller retail component.

4 Hotel.

5 How about extending existing supermarket.

6 Deli, shoe shop.

7 Smaller retail shop units.

8 How about a Waitrose shop?

9 Parking facilities “not tied”

10 A shopping Street with trees.

1 Detached houses, flats

2 South Crosshill residents have no objection to detached housing.

3 Entrance to development to be via existing.

4 Old buildings – convert into flats.

5 Hotel

6 Specialist shops.

7 Detached houses – diverse mix.

8 Pedestrian area.

9 Affordable housing – first time buyers.

10 Keep historical buildings.

11 Community hall (hires).

12 Parking, long term / park & ride.

13 Open space: municipal. Amphitheatre, woodland, Civic, recreation space, buffer zone.

14 Council building / health care not to be funded from revenue budget.

15 Every age group.

1 By Pass.

2 Under pass (road).

3 School buses, free school buses, electric buses. Legal issues ‘safety at schools’ and European law on levels of pollution.

4 Is EDC allowing increase in pollution good publicity?

5 Cycle lanes and walkways to high and primary schools.

6 Covered walkway.

7 Leave land for a period of time.

8 Walkway to station.

1 Small shops

2 No big retail e.g. supermarkets.

3 Delivery service from small shops.

4 Fresh produce.

5 Real coffee shop.

6 Youth enterprise. – Grow own produce 7 sell it – small markets.

7 Get rid of council and planners. Why should Bishopbriggs pay for East Dunbartonshire council’s mistakes? East Dunbartonshire is a big area.

8 Car showroom

9 Hotel

10 Cinema / 10 pin bowling / laser quest.

11 Community hub.

12 Shoe shop.

13 Fish shop.

14 Book shop.

15 Shops with flats above (traditional).

16 Wine bar for quiet grown ups.

1 5 a side.

2 Indoor Skate Park, part of a wider facility. How funded? Issue with use and how to control use.

3 Want peace.

4 Privately run facilities as council cannot afford it.

5 Young people do damage.

6 Cinema.

7 Tennis – 10 pin bowling.

8 Provision for girls and boys.

9 Skate parks age group is up to 40. Good if well organised. Noise issue.

10 No current provision.

11 Centre for activities.

12 Indoor is important.

13 Young market. - Enterprise units run by young people.

14 Organised = clearances.

15 Area too precious to provide for youth.

16 Bishopbriggs is a residential area.

17 Need to provide things for them to do.

18 Laser quest type of development.
